Au Revoir, Statue of Liberty
The cold chill in the air woke me up along with the rumble of our diesel engines. I slid out of bed and ran up the stairs to see that we were still at the dock. I was happy that I didn’t miss this special morning. This wasn’t any ordinary departure. We started to untie the lines and pushed off. We came out of the marina and I looked over and saw the towering buildings of manhattan once again. Dad turned the boat to port and we set off down the East River. In the distance I saw the Statue of Liberty. I was so excited!
It was marathon day and the bay was filled with ferries shuttling the runners to Staten Island where the race starts. Last year my Mom and Dad ran the marathon and took one of those ferries. There was one ferry right in front of the Statue of Liberty that had a a huge Nike advertisement that said “NYC won’t carry you, it pushes you”. And it was funny because it was being pushed by a tug! We got really close to the statute of liberty but we weren’t allowed to visit the island because of the government shut down. I was very sad that I wasn’t able to go. Hopefully on our trip back in the spring I’ll be able to visit. I really hope the government won’t still be shut down then!
We continued going south and we passed Staten Island. There was a big bridge that the runners go over right at the start. While we passed under it we saw a bunch of buses. I think they might have been carrying the elite runners!
We headed down the New Jersey Coast. We were in luck because it was very calm that day. We continued cruising all the way to Atlantic City. Just before we got there we saw a pod of dolphins! It was so exciting to see the first dolphins of our trip!
We headed into the bay and anchored for the night. We had steak and potatoes for dinner. It tasted so good. After dinner I hopped into bed and in a blink, it was the next day. That next day the wind was nucking and the waves were huge. Stay tuned for the next post!
